Teenage Band Reaches Live & Unsigned Final

A band of teenagers from Devon has made it through to the final of a national competition for unsigned bands and solo artists.

Four-piece group Ten Zero One will perform at London’s O2 arena in the finals of Live and Unsigned 2011 on 23 July.

Just 64 finalists have been chosen from 10,000 UK applicants.

The winning act will be given a recording contract, performing slots at festivals and a UK tour.
‘Youngest finalists’

The band – comprising Gary Lawrence-James, 13, drums; Jack Rawlings, 13, guitar and vocals; Charlie Smith, 14, guitar and vocals; and Max Williams, 13, bass guitar and lead vocals – has been together for just over a year.

The members of the Tavistock-based group met each other at school, found they “just clicked” and started the band in May 2010.

Max’s mother, Kathryn Williams, said: “They are the only band from the South West regional finals put through by the judges on the day.

“It is amazing taking into account their age, not having too much gigging experience behind them, and having only been together for a year.

“They are set to be one of the youngest band finalists there.”

Another Devon artist will also be at the final. Singer-songwriter Ellie Campbell, 17, from Braunton, is also to perform.

Live and Unsigned describes itself as the UK’s largest national music competition for original unsigned acts and bands.
