Dermot O’Leary has had his American dream wrecked by Simon Cowell, who had decided he won’t be taking the X Factor host with him to front the US version.
Cowell is thought to be opting for a dual-host format, with a “non-conventional” female superstar presenting X Factor USA alongside a male pin-up singer.
O’Leary had been short-listed for the job in the States.
The 37-year-old told The Mirror: “I am obviously disappointed that I didn’t get the American gig. I would have loved a crack at it. At least I was the only Brit to make the shortlist.”
An insider said: “It’s no reflection on Dermot. The US show is just going a different way. He is happy with the new deal, while Simon is confident he will deliver an all-star cast over in the US.”
O’Leary has now renewed his deal with the UK X Factor, although Cowell has yet to make his mind up on the judges.
